Why You Should Create a Case Study Deck

Some interview advice I received a few months back was that I should create a case study deck for any future interviews. The feedback I received was that when I share my screen, it was really distracting for the interviewer to follow my cursor and all the scrolling up and down I did while I tried to walk through my case study. She recommended that I make a case study deck so that I can control the pacing and organize all my material.

I thought it was a brilliant idea, I was wondering why I did not realize that soon enough.

A few weeks later, I found that Kelli Vu and Sarah Joo were going to have a talk hosted by Design Buddies, where they would talk about their formula for a case study deck. You can see the recording for it here! Through them, I found out there were so many more reasons to create a case study deck:

  1. You can control, pick and choose what content you want to share with the interviewer.
  2. You can control the flow and the pacing of the presentation. The content can be formed into a more digestible format.
  3. There would be less text and more visuals to focus on.
  4. It’s more customizable. The narrative and content can be tweaked to fit each potential employer you are getting interviewed by.
  5. There is the chance for you to show off your soft skills. Show off your presentation skills which will come in handy if you ever need to present to stakeholders!
  6. You can show your personality and any relevant skills in your deck. For example, if you are an illustrator and you love making art, you can add your illustrations to the deck.
  7. It’s easy to share with any designers or recruiters you meet. You can have an offline version of the PDF of the slides ready anywhere. If your audience is interested, you can even forward the PDF to them.

I hope you find these reasons to make a case study deck just as good as I did! They have definitely helped me present my case study in an organized manner.

If you haven’t checked out Kelli Vu and Sarah Joo’s talk yet, here’s the video. Make sure to check out and join Design Buddies, they always host great talks:
