Overlooked Design Aspects

There are some things that aren’t talked about enough when we create designs and artworks. Speakers and mentors will always talk about clearly articulating design decisions or designing with users in mind. Of course those are some of the most important parts of the design process but what I shall mention below are some parts that are overlooked:

  1. Make a journal about your journey in design. It’s always great to see how far you’ve improved from when you started. It’ll make for great conversations when you network with people in the industry. Plus, when you want to make a case study, you’ll remember everything you need to craft a detailed story of the events.
  2. Don’t forget to take breaks. Sometimes our eyes will be unable to see errors in our designs or potential improvements until we take a small break from the project. Coming back to the project with fresh, rested eyes will allow you to spot nuances you never mentioned before.
  3. Design for accessibility in mind. It’s always better to be mindful of others and think about designing to creative positive impacts for people with disabilities. Even if you feel that people with disabilities are part of a low percentage of your target audience, you shouldn’t just throw away a percentage of your market just because it will take more time to design for them in mind. If we want to create a better world we can start by being inclusive.
  4. When you are working in a company or a team, set time aside to get to personally know the people. Relationships don’t build over work, by itself, it also builds by getting to know who you work with. By setting aside time to get to know them, you can foster meaningful relationships where you can openly learn from them and empower each other in the workplace.
